Co-Opted Governor

Would you like to have the chance to make a real difference in your community, and contribute to the development of our outstanding village school?

We are currently seeking volunteers to join our Governing Body as a co-opted governor. A co-opted governors are people who, according to the governing body, have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

We are offering this opportunity through parents/carers of children in our school, but applications are welcome from anyone – so if you know someone who might be interested, please share this information with them. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to help our school maintain its current high standards, and outstanding ethos, and to be part of shaping the future for our children, and our whole school community.  We would particularly like to recruit members who have experience in HR, finance and/or legal, so if you feel that you have skills or knowledge in either of these areas we would very much like to hear from you.

The main responsibilities of governors are to:

• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent;
• Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; and
• Ensuring the voices of stakeholders are heard.

The successful candidate will be given a full induction including introduction to the governor training pathway, which enables all governors to access training courses for general governance and for more specialised aspects of the role. As they gain in experience, governors will take on various responsibilities on the board.  Access to the secure governors’ area on our school website will be granted so that all information necessary for governing board meetings will be accessible. The full Governing Body usually meets six times a year – once per term. 

Governing board members also have the opportunity to come into school to visit lessons, collective worship and all other areas of school life and are, of course, invited to join us for school celebrations such as performances and sports events, where they can see for themselves the value of their contribution.

Safer Recruitment:

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to Safer Recruitment checks in line with the Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, which includes an enhanced DBS check. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 175 (as amended) and will involve contact with children and, therefore, the post holder will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
